Ibiza is such a popular place to go that it is hard to imagine how it manages to accommodate all the visitors. There are only 100,000 residents. Everybody else is transient,
Knowing this, Ibiza has built many structures to accommodate the needs of the various travelers to the island. There are hotels, hostels, villas and apartments available for rent no matter where on the island you go.
For most travelers the hotel is the best place to stay. Hotels offer complete services – like housekeeping, room service, porters and a concierge. The hotels are usually safe places which is often a major concern for foreigners. A great hotel is more than just a place to store ones bags and sleep after partying. It should also have great built in facilities like a pool and a gym for those trying to stay in shape. They often have good restaurants within their premises and some even have a club of their own. With all of that in place, all you have to do is have fun and enjoy your vacation.
Hotels are rated in stars. The ratings are based on the quality of their establishment in terms of furnishings and service. The highest possible rating is 5 stars. Usually the higher the rating, the higher the rates are.
Those visitors traveling on a budget need not worry. Ibiza abounds with hotels of various ratings. There is sure to be one that matches the budget.
Hostels are often used by young travelers who are watching their budget. These are usually 2 star hotels or lower that are supervised lodging. The rates are not as high as in the premium hotels, which makes these perfect for students.
For those who plan to stay in Ibiza for a longer period getting an apartment or villa can actually make more sense. Hotels compute on a daily rate where as apartments or villas have weekly or monthly rates which often come out cheaper in terms of room rates. You will however be on your own unless you hire help to maintain the place for you. This is a great choice though for families or friends traveling together.
If there is one place that history buffs should go see in Ibiza, it is D’Alt Vila. This is also known as the old town and is a UN World Heritage site. Be prepared if you decide to explore this place. You will need comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of walking.
The name D’alt Vila literally translates to high town. It is built on a hill and has narrow, steep cobblestone streets that wind around which is why sensible footwear is essential.
You can enter D’alt Vila through the main portal. This dramatic entrance is reached by crossing a drawbridge. The Portal de Tablas is flanked by statues made from Roman stone. It opens directly on to the main plaza.
On the other hand, you might prefer using the other entrance. The Portal Nou is actually the back entrance. It has a more gradual slope. You are actually walking downward for most of your tour which is gentler on those travelers not used to the vigor of exploring.
Within the walls of D’Alt Vila time seems to have stopped. You will find white washed homes and gothic houses. There are even locals (Ibicencos) dressed in the traditional black garments.
Along the way you will find beautiful wide stone courtyards behind wooden doors. There are chapels and graceful staircases. There are also pedestals that talk of the history of Ibiza and the people who once lived there for a time. The Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs and Catalans have each left their mark on this city and the island.
The walls were built to stand against canon balls and today they still surround this portion of the city. From the battlements you get great panoramic views of Ibiza. There is nothing like it.
The archeological museum is found within the walls of old town. It contains pre-historic artifacts dating between the 5th and 7th century BC. The museum also has one of the most impressive Roman collections. The beauty of this collection is that the artifacts were all found on the island.
Don’t forget to drop by the gift shop before leaving D’Alt Vila. If you find yourself in the city after the sun sets, enjoy a meal under the stars in one of the medieval town’s restaurants. The food is good and you may get only this one chance to enjoy a meal in a medieval castle.
